Mental Health Awareness Month is observed in May which reaches millions of people through media, local events and screenings.

On May May 18, 2019 at Lemon Laine in Houston, TX. Human HQ and Melanin Health hosted Real Talk Conversation to discuss mental health.

Eliza Boquin moderated the discussion alongside an amazing panelist who are making their mark in the mental health space and breaking down walls that surround mental health.

Automatic thoughts was the first to be discussed which couldn’t have been a better start. As the conversation unfolded the panelist helped peel back the layers of thoughts and their connections. There were so many ah ha moments that I could go on and on about but I won’t for the sake of skimmable content. So I have recapped some highlights below:

Panelist Highlights

Kayla Clark do what you want to do approach allows you the ease needed to tackle moments in life in a way that doesn’t make you feel that you are completely failing at adulting.

Paul Belk honesty on not doing it well when asked what his regimen is? gives you that sense of relief that the societal pressures of trendy regimens  can just take a back seat because not getting it right all time is liberating AF.

Eboni Harris validity of affirmations continues to be a tried and true approach that you can count on.

Yvonne Oke insight on being present is a gentle reminder that is needed to manage the new normal of distraction.

It’s Dope Because

Kayla Clark it’s dope on both sides that I get to honor and hold space for just you and nobody else. It’s your time and the validating process that I am not alone for the client. Having someone there to tell me that I am not crazy makes all the difference.

Paul Belk ethically we have to come in with no judgement. We get to co-create together and create something that has never existed in your life.

Eboni Harris it’s very rare that you get to have a conversation that is all about your healing and not reciprocal.

Yvonne Oke there’s nothing like someone to witness your story and hold it for you and whose only job is to be there and hold that space.

Eliza Boquin it’s life changing. All you have to do is go and worry about you. You have someone that is not shaming or judging you.

The knowledge shared was endless, the resources and tactics are worth investiving in and applying to ensure that you are taking care of yourself mentally.
